All children have the right to feel safe, and that should start at home. However, millions of children around the world have been forced to leave their homes by war and disasters. Others live in dangerous communities or experience violence at home. We fund programmes which address children’s fundamental need for a safe and secure place to call home.

Durable shelters
We support refugee families through the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and other leading organisations. Together with social enterprise Better Shelter and UNHCR, we’ve created a safer, more durable shelter. This gives refugee children and their families, who have lost their homes during conflicts and disasters, a safer and more dignified life. The shelters can be built quickly from a flat-pack. Thanks to their modular design, they can also be used as healthcare centres.

Brighter Lives for Refugees
Through our Brighter Lives for Refugees campaign, we are helping make refugee camps safer, better places for families. The campaign, which ran three times in 2014 and 2015, raised a total of €30.8 million. The money is bringing solar lighting, renewable energy and education to people living refugee camps in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Reconnecting displaced families
Family and friends make a house a home for children. That’s why we fund innovative technology to help refugees and displaced people reconnect with separated family members worldwide.

Safer communities
Children need safer homes and communities in order to feel secure. We fund programmes which use education and personal development to help young people in communities with high rates of violence. We’re also looking at the bigger picture. We support global efforts to help governments find ways to end violence against children, so the place they call home is one of safety and security.
