“Today, our goal with the IKEA Foundation is in keeping with exactly what we’ve always tried to do as a home furnishings company – create a better everyday life for as many people as possible around the world.

When I decided to give the company to a foundation back in 1982, I did it because I wanted to ensure that IKEA will continue as an independent company long after I am not there to look after the business. I also wanted to ensure that we use some of our profits to help create a better life for the many people in need.

For families living in poverty, the needs are obviously greater than for those in more prosperous conditions. But we all share basic needs: a secure home, good health, a regular income, a desire to keep our children safe, to see them get a good education and succeed in life. That’s why the IKEA Foundation has decided to focus our funding on these key necessities, in order to improve the situation for children and youth across the developing world so that they can create a better future for themselves and their families.

By focusing on these fundamentals for families in parts of the world where the need is the greatest, we can make the biggest difference and, most importantly, help people help themselves to a better everyday life today –and tomorrow—turning the cycle of poverty into a circle of prosperity.”
