Refugee Housing

Projects we fund

Working with Refugee Housing and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR ), the IKEA Foundation funds the development and manufacturing of a new modular shelter to be used in refugee camps.

Many of the current shelters used in refugee camps have a life span of approximately six months before the impact of sun, rain and wind means it needs to be replaced. Yet long-term refugee situations mean that, on average, refugees stay in camps for 12 years.

Refugee Housing and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Innovation team are working to develop a new style of shelter that would be sustainable, durable and ultimately reduce the overall costs to provide a temporary home for displaced people.

The IKEA Foundation is funding this innovative project with Refugee Housing because we believe every child has the right to a place to call home.
