Half the Sky Movement


Turning oppression into opportunity for women worldwide. 
 
A woman sews in India © David Orr / IKEAThe Half the Sky Movement works in partnership with NGOs and charities to inspire individuals and organizations to get involved and invest their time, money and ideas in making a difference for millions of women and their children worldwide.
 
The movement aims to raise awareness of the oppression and inequality faced by women in the developing world, and drive action through its multimedia project, which includes:

  • Television: A 4-hour television series highlighting stories from in nine countries.
  • Game: A cutting-edge social impact game, hosted on Facebook, in which exciting virtual game play triggers corresponding real-world, charitable action.
  • Mobile games: Four mobile-based social impact games—addressing the issues of maternal health, sex trafficking, domestic violence and gender norms—for distribution to millions of cell phones in India, Kenya and Tanzania.

Half the Sky builds on the bestselling book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
